Nacht der Forschung 2025 – we’re in!

If you want to know more about how work was defined, regulated, and contested in Islamic societies between the 10th and 20th centuries, the TRAIL project invites you to discover the social and legal history of labour – from contracts and guilds to questions of coercion and freedom – and to explore surprising parallels and contrasts with today’s debates about work. Join us on 6 September 2025 in the Main Building of the University of Bern (Ground Floor, Room 110, 4–11 pm).

Alongside TRAIL, two further SNSF-funded projects will also be presented:

  • TraSIS – on slavery and unfreedom in Arabic-speaking societies, from the 19th century to the present.

  • MediMath – on the history of algebra in the Mediterranean, from Baghdad to Central Europe (9th–17th centuries).

We bring history to life:

  • trace how products from the Middle East travelled across the Mediterranean

  • build your own astrolabe

  • test your knowledge in our quiz and win prizes

We look forward to meeting many of you!
